Encodes AtObgC, a plant ortholog of bacterial Obg. AtObgC is a chloroplast-targeting GTPase essential for early embryogenesis. Mutations in this locus result in embryo lethality. The protein is dually localized in the stroma and the inner envelope membrane and is involved in thylakoid membrane biogenesis and functions primarily in plastid ribosome biogenesis during chloroplast development.
