Encodes SCABRA1 (SCA1), a nuclear gene encoding a plastid-type ribosomal protein that functions as a structural component of the 70S plastid ribosome. The sca1-rps5 allele exhibits defects in plastid 16SrRNA processing and a resulting decrease in accumulation of photosynthetic proteins. Loss-of-function mutations enhance the polarity defects of the as2 mutants.
