VIR3 encodes a putative chloroplast metalloprotease that is localized to the thylakoid membrane. The vir3-1 mutant came out of a genetic suppressor screen of the Arabidopsis variegation mutant yellow variegated (var2). The suppressor displayed an additional virescent phenotype, i.e. the bases of young leaves were yellow, and leaf color gradually turned to green toward the leaf tips.
